I am a 34 year old male in the UK with chronic back and neck pain for 5 years now. I believe most of my pain is generated from posture during my sleep and throughout the day. I am 6 foot 4 inches tall, with wide shoulders and a medium build. I’ve been seeking medical attention and advice from various specialties and have only experienced a little improvement. I stretch and exercise regularly and am improving awareness of my posture.
My question for you is how can I relieve/ease the gradual tension that builds in my neck and shoulders throughout the day. I wake up with relatively mild tension in my neck and upper back, and then it builds to significant discomfort as the day progresses. What can I do to stop this progression or relieve it before it gets to an unbearable stage?
Given that you’ve already seen various other therapists with no success, your condition probably isn’t going to respond much to me telling you to get a different pillow in bed and sort out your posture through the day! I’d want to go deeper into your medical history to see if something has happened to you to trigger this and I’d want to examine you thoroughly to see how your joints and muscles are working (or not working).
If you’ve not tried a chiropractor before, go and see one. See if they can help – but don’t expect instant change, you’ve had this a long time and it will take a while to correct!
